Apple harvesting.
"Our producers are confused because the indications they receive go against their experience. Warehouses and cooperatives are telling them to harvest their apples earlier and earlier, probably to better tackle the market, but producers know that the fruit will not taste good," explains Walter Thomas, Deputy for Agriculture for the Egna municipality.
The report was broadcast by Rttr Alto Adige.
Thomas added that apples part of the Gala group are indeed red, but they are not ripe if harvested too early.
"Our producers earn 5 cents per kg, while their expenses are 25-30 cents per kg on average, leaving no room for investment. Europe expects a slight drop in production but Poland - one of our main competitors - seem to be growing theirs. In addition, the Russian ban means a lot of produce is available in Europe," stressed Giorgio Nones from the local Coldiretti.
A young producer was also interviewed - apple production is only his second job as he would not be able to earn enough if he were to do it full time. In addition, the latest trends reveal that red apples are more popular, while demand for yellow apples is decreasing.
