China: Guava harvest setback

The guava price is extremely low this year with a buying price of only 0.6 RMB per kg. The wholesale price on the market is 1.2 RMB to 1.4 RMB per kg. The retail price is at 1.6 RMB to 2 RMB per kg. Even though there was an abundant harvest of guavas, the farmers have no reason to be happy. It is understood that the market is saturated and that a portion of the guavas are comparatively bad in quality. This is the main reason for the low guava price this year.

Yuzhou district's Associate Director, Mr. Zhong, tried to explain the situation but the reasons are complex. Firstly it is becoming increasingly easy to transport fruit from places like Guangdong, Hainan and even the South-East Asian countries which now pervade the fruit market of Yulin. This has an influence on the price of the guavas. Also, July and August are exactly the peak season for fruit sales. Many varieties are harvested in this season and sold on the market. Thus, the market unavoidably moves toward a brief period of saturation. What's more, some of the guava trees have become old. As a result, the quality of the summer fruits from these trees is slightly less good than those of younger trees. This also makes it more difficult to fetch a good price for the guavas.
