Spain: Smith pomegranate harvest kicks off with smaller calibres

The Spanish company Lyfruits, specialised in the production of pomegranates grown in Valencia, has started harvesting its earliest variety, the Smith. This pioneering company decided to diversify its production with different varieties to cover almost the entire pomegranate campaign, from August to late November.

With 14 degrees Brix and 2 degrees of acidity, the harvest of its more than 100,000 kilos of Smith pomegranates has already started. These will arrive in a few days to European markets, which they will continue to supply in the coming months with the ACCO, Mollar and Wonderful varieties. Overall, they will produce more than 200,000 kilos of pomegranates and they will have access to a similar volume from associated producers.

José Bellver

Regarding this campaign, José Bellver, managing partner at Lyfruits, states: "This year, we've had very unusual weather conditions and somewhat anomalous in Valencia, with an almost permanent spring throughout the year and lack of rainfall. This has taken a toll on the calibres of the Smith variety, which will not be as big as last year. Moreover, yields are between 15 and 20 lower this year."

Here you can see a video in which the production of pomegranates is illustrated, from setting until the point they ripen:

"In any case, we are satisfied about having achieved a good Brix degree level, while managing to substantially reduce the acidity of the Smith." The producer stressed that "the Smith is like an early Wonderful, with a little more acidity, which is appreciated in the markets of Northern Europe, especially in Germany."

Lyfruits has managed to double its production compared to last year and expects to continue growing in the future. Proof of this is that the business and international marketing project are consolidating. His two partners, José Bellver and Miguel Camarelles, continue to acquire new rural properties for their cultivation, in a clear commitment to pomegranates.

The owners of this company are said to be satisfied. "We are in a position to supply different varieties of the best quality pomegranates to our European clients from this moment and for the entire campaign."
