China: Peruvian avocado supply ramp up summer sales

“This year’s volumes of imported avocados continue to pick up. At the moment, we have Mexican and Peruvian avocados on offer. Mexican avocados have recently become available: in the three months before there were only Peruvian avocados. Each year, volumes are increasing. Consumers get to know the product and supplies are growing, which again helps to make it better known.. More and more companies started to import avocados and competition is increasing. But we think this is a positive trend for the whole industry in the long term. Because as the volume keeps going up, the price keeps getting lower. It helps to introduce the product to a larger crowd.”

“Avocado sales have been strong throughout summer. In the past, we could not import Peruvian avocados. This is the first year they have had market access. Peruvian avocados are available mainly between May to August. Without this supply, volumes over summer used to be low and the quality was not so stable. Peruvian avocados are a very good addition to the market in the summer time. 70% of our imports are sold at wholesale markets; the other 30% is sold to retailers. Wholesale market prices start to go down now as Mexico start to load more avocados to China”

“We have a presence in some of China’s major cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Wuhan. We are in the process of opening new ripening rooms in Guangzhou and Wuhan. They will be put into use before the end of the year. More people are aware that avocados have to be ripe and soft before they can be eaten. In the future we will have the ripening facilities in all our branches.”

“We supply ripened avocados to restaurants and retailers. In the wholesale market we predominantly sell regular avocados. The Peruvian avocados become available when the Mexican avocados move to the late season. I would say the Peruvian avocados did very well in the wholesale market this season”
