Don Limón

“Our motto: think global, act local”

In 2050, 9 billion people are to be expected to live on our planet. One big question is how we can feed them. Smart agriculture is hereby key. Treating our planet and soil carefully, and using water and energy resourcefully are main principals of a smart and sustainable agriculture.

High standards
The Don Limón approach is to find a way to produce fresh fruits in close partnership with farmers in the southern hemisphere by creating an economic, social and environmental impact in the developing countries. “Our produced food is for the national and international consumption and of high quality, which meets European as well as North American standards,” states Andreas Schindler from Don Limón. “Smallholders are empowered through investments and new technical equipment, educated through training centers that will expand their knowledge about pesticides, water and energy usage, processing and packaging. In the line of this program water and energy projects are also initiated – bringing together farmers and international companies that work for environmental-friendly agriculture.”

Partnerships with local farmers
The company doesn’t force methods onto the farmers. “It’s about partnering up with local producers to find individual solutions to local challenges. According to the motto: think global, act local.” Through successful partnerships with the BMZ (German federal ministry of economic co-operation and development) and other NGOs, Don Limón was able to start projects in India and Mexico. Additional support and country specific agricultural knowledge is given through University collaborations that provide on-location assistance and a scientific approach. Further partnerships with USAid and projects in Africa and Latin America are planned for the near future.

World without Hunger
“Our company is constantly developing, just like the market does. We don’t simply want to buy and sell fruits and vegetables; furthermore Don Limón wants to work towards a World without Hunger. This might seem really ambitious but Don Limón is not the only one thinking about how to provide safe and healthy food for the growing world population.”

It is an overall approach from Don Limón to have an impact and try to be part of a change for a better and brighter future. “This is the message that Don Limón wants to spread and consequently, directly address the challenges of our time and start to act socially responsible.”
