Argentina: Producers will give away pears and apples to protest

Producers of pear and apple from Alto Valle will travel to Buenos Aires to protest at the gates of the presidential house against the crisis that is affecting the economy of two Patagonian provinces.

The producers will reach the vicinity of Plaza de Mayo next Monday so that president Mauricio Macri accepts to meet with them to discuss the current situation, and so that he reaffirms the promises he made earlier this year. They will also give away fruit to the people passing nearby the protest.

Producers from the valley will go to Buenos Aires and distribute fruit to call attention to the many problems faced in Rio Negro and Neuquen. A few months after having thrown tons of pears or apples on the main routes of their provinces, producers will take their product to the gates of the presidential house in the hope that someone understands that an important regional economy is gradually disappearing.

"We are ready to give them an important aid, but we want to sit with the business sector and the unions so that they guarantee investments and better jobs," said president Macri earlier this year when consulted about the ongoing protests that disrupted the passage on national route 22 (the route that links Rio Negro and Neuquen).

Last summer, the president of the Producers Cooperative from Fernandez Oro, Edgardo Artero, nationalized the conflict after blaming the governor of Rio Negro, Alberto Weretilneck, for the policies towards the sector. "He did nothing for us," he said. Francisco Bezich, president of the Chamber of Producers from Cipolletti, also ranted about Weretilneck. "He abandoned us in recent times," said the rural leader.
