Peru: Olmos already has 400 hectares of organic bananas

More than 120 farmers from the valleys of Olmos and Cascajal, in the region of Lambayeque, that are grouped in associations promoted by the Special Olmos Tinajones Project (ESDP), have joined the organic banana productive chain by planting 400 hectares of this product in Olmos.

The planting of the 400 hectares of banana requires a total investment of 30 million soles, 18 million of which were financed with a non-refundable credit from the Agroideas Program, and the remaining 12 million soles by producers through a credit from Agrobanco.

The development of a greater number of hectares of organic bananas will generate 400 new jobs. According to estimates, annual sales will amount to 13,000 tons, which means the country would make nearly $7.2 million dollars and producers almost $4 million dollars.

The implementation of these new business plans will allow the Old Valley of Olmos to have a total of 500 hectares devoted to this production, as 100.5 hectares in the Valley, which were cultivated by the associations La Juliana, Agroimpe, and Miguel Grau, are already being harvested and 2 twenty-ton containers of organic bananas are exported to the Netherlands on a weekly basis.
