Reconversion in Lambayeque

Peru: Avocado and organic bananas replace other crops

Betzabeth Marquez, the national head of the Agroideas program announced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI) will invest a total of 34.9 million soles in the region of Lambayeque to replace 458 hectares of rice and other basic crops incorporated into the process of agricultural production restructuring with avocado and organic bananas.

Betzabeth Marquez also said the Minagri was promoting an agricultural production restructuring process so as to enhance the competitiveness of the agricultural producers from Lambayeque.

According to Marquez, the Minagri had published 12 ministerial resolutions (RM) allowing the Agroideas to transfer 20.9 million soles to Agrobanco, i.e. 60 percent of the required amount to acquire the agricultural machinery and technology to prepare the ground, install the new plantings, and harvest them.

This investment will allow the sector to acquire 734,000 tillers of organic banana and 25,000 avocado seedlings, which will be installed in 399 hectares and 59 hectares in the districts of Olmos and FerreƱafe, respectively, as well as organic matter, technical assistance for the planting and harvesting, cables way to transport the bananas, and irrigation systems, among other materials that will benefit producers.

The rest of the investment will be undertaken by the producers through loans from Agrobanco, which manages the Agroperu Fund for agricultural reconversion projects.
