Peru: Junin sends 76 tons of garlic to Brazil

The National Agrarian Health Service, SENASA - Junin, certified that Junin exported 76 tons of garlic to Brazil during the first months of 2016.

The certification process conducted by SENASA consisted in the inspection of 1% of the cargo, which was sent in batches, to evaluate the presence of pests, soil waste (carrier of pathogens), the garlic's appearance, their packaging and labelling; all of which are mandatory health requirements to obtain the health certificate required to export this product.

The two varieties of garlic exported, the Chinese and Napuri varieties, were produced in approximately 12 hectares and were sent to the states of São Paulo and Acre in Brazil. Junin will export three other batches of 76 tons to Brazil in late August.

"The district of Sicaya has areas that are suitable for the cultivation of garlic and farmers that know how to cultivate this crop, thus buyers are satisfied with the first batch they receive and make more orders," said Jose Avalos, head of SENASA's plant health in Junin.

He also said that, at this time of year, Junin was the only region that had garlic production, a factor that benefited the producer's economy. A box of 10 kilos of Chinese garlic is worth $36 dollars while a box of the Napuri variety costs $28 dollars.
