English plums come into season

As the stonefruit season gets into full swing it is obvious that volumes are not as abundant as last year.

"Last year there were still issues due to the Russian ban and there was a lot of fruit around," explains Sab Bosco from AB Fruit. "Even with lower volumes we will do OK as we have plans in place to fill orders. We get our fruit from Covent Garden Market."

The most popular stonefruit just now in the UK is peaches and nectarines, but plums and cherries are also going well. The Spanish and English cherries are popular as are French apricots.

English plums are coming into season now and the good weather has brought those on a bit earlier.

Stonefruit is not as popular in the UK as it is in some other European countries due to the fact that it is not as easy to eat as other fruits such as apples or berries.

Brexit has influenced the trade in general, with the Pound falling against the Euro, but according to Sab it has been worse for dollar items from the South American countries.
