Shixia dragon eye from Guangxi province listed on the market

August, the month of dragon eye fruit, marks the market listing season of the most famous dragon eye variety from Guangxi province: Shixia dragon eyes. According to Mr. Ye from Nanping county in Guangxi province, "the picking season of our dragon eyes generally starts at the end of July or the beginning of August, with a supply season of around one month".

Shixia Dragon eyes

The name Shixia (literally means the gap between the rocks) dragon eyes are deeply connected with its growing conditions. It is mentioned that the ancient dragon eye trees were grown in the gap between the rocks. Because their roots are caught up by the rocks, they can only go deeper into the earth. This unique growing condition guarantees its good flavor. Mr. Ye further explained:" Shixia dragon eyes from Pingnan region have thick flesh and small pits, and they are very refreshing and taste very sweet and delicious."

This year a lot of fruits in the Southern region are severely impacted by Spring coldness and the continuous rainy season. In comparison, "our dragon eyes' volume remains the similar level as of last year and the quality is also very stable. At this stage, the market purchase price is around 6.4 Yuan/kilo."

2016 harvest season for Shixia dragon eye arrives

Pingnan county is one county that is directly under Guiguang city in Guangxi Special Autonomous Region. Meanwhile it is also the Shixia dragon eye plantation demonstration county. In 2014, its plantation area reached 16,000 hectares, and it is honored with Agricultural Product Geographical Indications Registration Certificate from the Department of Agriculture. According to Mr. Ye, "Currently nearly the whole county is actively engaged in Shixia dragon eye plantation, and it covers different varieties. August marks the gold selling period for our dragon eyes and we hope more and more consumers can taste our quality dragon eye fruits."
