Honduras exports up to 25% less bananas

According to Hector Castro, a member of the Association of Banana and Plantain Producers of the north of the country, so far this year banana exports have decreased between 20 and 25 percent.

The fall in projections is due to climate change last year and this year, said the producer.

Estimates are that banana exports will decrease between 20 and 25 percent in 2016, which means the country would export 10 to 11 million boxes this year.

Last year the country exported 14 million boxes of 18 kilos and this year and, according to projections, the country is going to export some 11 million boxes this year that are worth some 22 million lempiras.

Castro said this would be the second year that they had a deficit, as last year the price of a box dropped by 50 to 60 cents of a dollar.
