Taking South African grapefruit as one example, its price increased from 130 Yuan/box (around 18 Euro) from the beginning of this season to 170 Yuan/box. In comparison, the price of South African oranges also increased from 140-150 Yuan per box to 210 Yuan a box.
In the opinion of some local fruit importers, these price increases are caused by both the extreme hot weather conditions in the past weeks in Eastern China, and because the quality of South African import citrus is increasing now the season is moving onwards.
In comparison with the price surge of orange products, the price of kiwi products keeps dropping. Taking Zespri kiwi as an example, the green kiwi price has dropped under 65 Yuan, and the gold kiwi price also went down from over 200 Yuan per box before the May Day holiday to the current 130-140 Yuan/box. The worst case occurred with the Chilean kiwi, which price dropped to 35 Yuan per box.
Chinese domestic kiwi's will gradually become available later in August. Until then, impacted by the news that China will strengthen its inspection efforts on New Zealand kiwis, prices of import kiwis are expected to increase as of this week.
As for avocado, its price also drops due to the continuous increase in supply volumes. For example, avocado prices dropped from over 200 Yuan per box in July to 150-160 Yuan per box in August.
