US: Kroger aims to optimise supplier collaboration -
Kroger’s analytics subsidiary, 84.51°, has acquired Market6, a predictive analytics company focused on optimising product movement through driving CPG supplier collaboration. Kroger will aim to leverage Market6’s technology to further enhance its operations and personalisation strategies. Market6 currently works with over 1,000 consumer packaged goods companies and retail customers, including Roundy’s. (igd.com)

UK: Greggs bakers to start selling fruit and nuts
The sausage roll king has seen a six percent rise in sales since it introduced its Balanced Choice menu earlier this year and will now also start selling fruit and nuts. Chief executive Roger Whiteside said Greggs intends to ramp up its healthy eating options, with new soups and packets of nuts and fruit to be introduced in the autumn and gluten-free options added later this year. Supervalu says evaluating sale of Save-A-Lot
Supervalu Inc said On Tuesday it is evaluating a sale of its Save-A-Lot business, among other efforts to separate the discount grocery chain from the company. Supervalu announced its intention to separate Save-A-Lot in January as bigger rivals such as Walmart Stores Inc have been increasing their focus on selling groceries. (Reuters)

Iceland foods’ Irish operation reduces losses
The Irish arm of frozen food retailer Iceland Foods posted losses of €771,000 in the year to the end of March, down from €2.93 million a year earlier, reports The Irish Times. The retailer saw its Irish revenues rise 32% to €21.8 million, the paper reported. It currently operates 12 stores in the Republic of Ireland, and is said to be ‘seeking additional sites’, having recently opened in Coolock, Dublin and Clonmel, Tipperary. (esmmagazine.com)

Delhaize to give away fruit to zoo
Delhaize has announced that it will join forces with Placnkendeal Park, a zoo in Belgium, gva.be reports. Fruits and vegetables that are no longer suitable for human consumption will now be given to animals. "These products can no longer be sold or given to people in need but they can be given to animals," says Delhaize. "We're talking about apples with areas of rot and crushed pears for example." The pilot project fits into the ambition of Delhaize to not have to throw away any food by 2020.

Aldi’s team GB food logos ‘mislead’ shoppers

Aldi has been accused by farmers’ leaders of misleading customers into thinking they are buying British fruit and vegetables by placing the British Olympic team logo on imported produce. The retailer announced in March that it was sponsoring Team GB at the Rio Olympics. (thetimes.co.uk)

India: Trent Hypermarket to relaunch Star Bazaar - sourcing from farms
Trent Hypermarket, the Tesco Tata joint venture in India, is working to relaunch its Star Bazaar hypermarket format in order to focus more on groceries and apparel. The stores will look to highlight promotional products better to shoppers, with more space dedicated to fresh food categories Jamshed Daboo, managing director of Trent Hypermarket, commented, "A lot more space and emphasis will be on fresh food. We do a lot of sourcing directly from farms, so the margins are good." (igd.com)

UK shoppers feel Brexit bite as grocery prices rise
The cost of a basket of popular supermarket items rose 1% in July, the second straight monthly increase, a comparison website said on Tuesday, as fallout from Brexit hits prices on the high street. After years of falling prices driven by rising competition among the big supermarket chains amid little or no consumer inflation, grocery prices have been tipped to rise as sterling weakness following Britain's vote to leave the European Union make imported goods more expensive. Saudi Arabia: Owner Panda supermarket suffers fall in net profit

Savola has announced that its net profit has fallen 43.2% to SAR246.7m (US$65.7m) in its second quarter as rising operating expenses and financial charges hit its performance. The company, which owns Saudi Arabia’s largest retailer Panda, said that its gross profit fell 4.7% to SAR1.3 bn (US$346.4m), which it pinned to lower margins in both its retail and food divisions. Savola said that the increase in operating expenses was ‘mainly due to opening of new stores and new distribution centre in the western region’. (igd.com)

Private equity funds interested in Italy’s Esselunga
International private equity funds have expressed interest in acquiring Italian supermarket chain Esselunga, according to local media reports.Italian daily, “Milano Finanza”, claims that Blackstone is interested in the retail part of the company, and the bid for the non-real estate assets would amount to around €6 billion. For its part, “La Repubblica”, mentions alleged interest by Advent International and Texas Pacific Group. (esmmagazine.com)

Jumbo goes eco for Dutch fruit and vegetables

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has announced a new initiative to help combat the decline of bees and butterflies. Working together with Greenpeace, it has promised to increase its range of fresh produce, cut flowers and garden plants, produced under the Dutch eco-label ‘Milieukeur’ and to double its share of organic fruit and vegetables by the end of 2019. Leader Price to trade in Italy from 2017 Q1
Geimex and the Italian distribution group CRAI, have forged a partnership which will see French discount chain, Leader Price, enter the Italian market. The confirmation of the development, represents the results of discussions for the move during 2015, which have allowed for the CRAI-Geimex partnership. The franchise will be managed by Geimex. The initial stores are planned to open in the first quarter of 2017. (esmmagazine.com)

Dia first half sales stable in Portugal

Spanish retail group Dia has reported a 1.7% decrease in net sales in Portugal during the first half of 2016, to €342.2m. However, when gross sales are taken into account (including VAT and sales by franchisees), Portugal recorded 0.7% growth in the same period, to €402.5m. As a result, Portugal accounted for 8% of total sales by the Dia group between January and June this year. (esmmagazine.com)

US: Kroger opens 1st branded c-store
Kroger, Cincinnati, last week opened the first convenience store under the Kroger banner in College Station, Texas, according to local reports. KAGS reported that chain officials said there were other Kroger c-stores in the planning stages. (supermarketnews.com)

Aeon Orange Co takes 14 Hypermarts in Myanmar
AEON ORANGE CO, a joint venture between Aeon Co and Creation Myanmar Group of Companies, has acquired assets including 14 supermarkets operated by Hypermart Asia Co, an affiliate of CMGC, and started operating in Myanmar on Monday. UK supermarket recalls peanuts over missing 'peanuts' label
The supermarket chain Lidl is recalling honey roasted peanuts sold in its U.K. stores because the word "peanut" in English is missing from the ingredients list on the back of some packets. The packets prominently feature the words "Peanuts" above a picture of the snack on the front. The German-owned company said in a statement Tuesday that European rules require that allergens must be highlighted in English on the ingredients list too, which wasn't the case on all packets.
