It emerged that, in 2016, 68,640 hectares were destined to the cultivation of industry tomatoes, i.e. over 6% less than 2015.
This drop was recorded mainly in central and southern Italy, and especially in the Foggia and Caserta areas, which experienced a 13.70% drop.
The figures are more stable in the north, where there was also a 5% growth in the areas destined to organic tomato cultivation. In the south, organic tomatoes were cultivated on 6% of the total hectares.
All main production areas had to deal with weather and phytosanitary problems which, combined with the drop in cultivated areas, should lead to a 6% drop in production.
