Austria: market report fruits and vegetables

Austrian fruit harvest 2016
The current estimates of Statistik Austria confirm existing prognoses. Concerning stonefruit cultivation, a sharp decrease in harvest is assumed. For example, the apricot harvest in the state of Lower Austria amounted to just 30 per cent of last year’s harvest. A total harvest failure is even held possible for Upper Austria. Prognoses for Burgenland are still relatively good, harvest might be 45 per cent smaller than last year. The cherry and morello harvest in Lower Austria could amount to only a third of the harvest of 2015. In Burgenland, the harvest could be 45 per cent smaller, and in Upper Austria this production group is also expected to fail completely. Compared to previous stonefruit types, the plum harvest in Lower Austria could turn out relatively well. The harvest will probably be one-third smaller than last year. The Tirol harvest is expected to be just over 60 per cent smaller.

Onions and potatoes - Lower Austria
Onion prices have been corrected and the market is waiting for a stabilisation of prices. The market is well-supplied with domestic products, and because of the low level of prices, export to Eastern Europe experienced a revival. By contrast, the situation on the Austrian potato market is calm and stable. Supply is gently rising and is easily sold through food trade. People are actively working on the early potato harvest. The market is well-supplied with potatoes, and, just as with onions, prices are showing a downward trend. Because of the holiday period there is a slight lack of demand, but with the transition to subsequent strains, which are harvested after the early potatoes, the market should stabilise and stable pricing should be possible again.
