Nursery De Klispoel

"Organic outdoor lettuce looks good"

Nursery de Klispoel, at the foot of the Moriane in Ubbergen, will once again be growing organic outdoor lettuce this summer; a mix of uncut red and green lettuce leaves, varying in colour and leaf shape.

"The lettuces have their feet in the fertile soil and grow with their heads 'under the sun'. The lettuce is firm because of this and has an intense colour and flavour," says Cindy Vermeulen.

Right after harvest the lettuce leaves are washed at the company itself and packaged into consumer bags of 100 grams, sometimes mixed with watercress. The product goes to various wholesalers, among
others, from where the product goes to (organic) stores and supermarkets throughout the Netherlands. "It really is a seasonal product; it can be supplied up until October, sometimes longer, depending on the weather."

For now the weather hasn't been a problem. The lettuce hasn't suffered from the rain in recent weeks, as it grows on raised beds and there is a drainage system in the soil. "The weather is cooperating now, we haven't had hail damage, the lettuce is growing well and passers-by see a wonderful palette of colours," conludes Vermeulen.
