Italy: 80% drop in spring onion exports

"It is not a positive period for spring onions. Weird weather, a heavy market and slow demand are not generating the results we were looking for," explains Campania Export's owner Biagio Sorrentino.

"In the past few months, quality varied a lot due to the weather. Germany has always been one of the main destinations for our exports but our production overlapped with the local produce. I believe we can talk about an 80% drop in exports."

"I would like to talk more with retailers. Suppliers are often considered as numbers rather than partners. I believe everyone would benefit from talking more."

His comment leads to a consideration. For example, retailers could schedule promotions a bit better, i.e. not planning them in January, but once production data is available. For example, if there is an oversupply of spring onions during a certain period, that would be the perfect moment to lower the prices. It may seem too simplistic, but more and more operators are suggesting it.

Every year, Campania Export transplants around 30 million plants. "We work throughout the year also thanks to the great summer varieties. Cycles are very short in summer - 60-70 days - while they are longer in winter."

Packaging is carried out according to clients' needs. "Standard bunches weigh 150 grams and are made up of 4-7 spring onions. The produce can also be arranged in crates holding 7, 10, 12 and up to 20 bunches."

"I'm sorry to see that Italian production is often thought to have lesser quality than the foreign ones. Often, everything rests on the prices and those with higher standards, like the producers in Campania, are penalised."
