volume not impacted by El nino

Peru avocado export increases

Despite the impact of El nino, the export volume of Peru avocado remained the same compared to that of last year, reaching an estimated 180,000 tons. Based on the information from SUNAT and PAC, last year a total of 27% of exported avocados were shipped to the US, while the other 65% to Europe. In comparison, the export volume to the US will reach around 45,000 tons this year, or 25% of the overall export volume.

According to the report from USDA GAIN, the Peru PROHASS Association attributed the avocado plantation volume decrease in the Northern region to this abnormal weather phenomenon, which impacted the return of warm temperatures, the high humidity level and the rainy season.

In the meantime, the harvest season in the middle and southern region came earlier than expected due to the low temperature. However, GAIN also confirmed that the export control measures will help the delay of the harvest season for more than one month.

"Despite the lower harvest volume, SUNAT's report claimed that the avocado export volume increased by over 40%, and value by over 50% between this January and April compared with that of the same period last year. And this may signify the change of local consumption to export consumption for Peru avocados."

As of last August, Peru is authorized to export its avocado to Japan and China by sea. It is estimated that the export volume this year to these two markets will be around 5,000 tons.
