Strawberry price much higher than normal in mid-July
It is summer and demand for strawberries is high. Normally, there is plenty of supply at this time, but not this year. On average, prices are also higher than is usual for this time of year. Petra Wautraets of LTV expects an increase in supply at the end of this week. “If all is well, we will have more Portola by then.”
Higher price
Wautraets estimates current prices to be about 30 per cent higher than normal in mid-July. “Of course, that is mostly due to the smaller volume because of the early start to the season, disappointing weather and good demand. The latter comes from several directions, we export to countries such as Poland, Finland, Sweden and Italy. Demand from Italy is not very high, but we have several regular Italian customers who order Belgian strawberries weekly.”
Price levels depend on quality and strain. “Prices vary from 1.80 to 2.50 Euro per half kilo. This may last a while, but I expect another decrease when volume increases,” Wautraets concludes.
