Slight delay for soft fruit in Val Martello

Val Venosta is not only the land of apples - the strawberry season is also picking up pace. We analysed it with Phili Brunner, production manager for MEG, a cooperative part of VIP - Val Venosta.

"We have harvested 25% of the fruit and volumes are in line with last year. The season started well, albeit slightly late, and so far there have been no particular problems, not even due to Drosophila suzukii".

The strawberries are cultivated between 1,000 and 1,800 metres asl. While the campaign started well, the rest will depend on the weather.

"Last week, we harvested the first raspberries. Quantities are increased this week and plants will enter full production next week and continue until October." Harvesting started ten days late due to the temperatures in June. Raspberries are cultivated in soil, under polytunnels or under nets. Only few plants are in open fields.

The currant campaign also started this week. "There has been a slight delay for this production too. Crops are located in the most difficult areas, for example the steepest ones, because plants are robust and adapt well."

Just like for Val Venosta apples, the branding and packaging of these fruits changed too (see photo above).
