Green onion supply and demand both light

Green onion supplies are fairly light, but so is demand, making for an adequate market for U.S. consumers.

“The vast majority of green onions are coming from Mexico. There are U.S. grown green onions, but that is a small percentage,” explained Raul Plascencia of Sunsation Farms in Monterey, California.

“Demand for iced green onions is fair, at best. Iceless green onions are seeing a steady demand due to the amount of contracted business,” he added.

Pricing varies throughout the U.S.

“Open market pricing for iced green onions is $6.50 to $7.00 per carton f.o.b., and iceless green onions are generally $9.00, but shippers are taking deals a bit less.”

Green onion demand is expected to climb as summer concludes, noted Plascencia.

“Demand for green onions usually starts to spike as we get more toward fall in September and October.”
