Portugal: Tough strawberry season till Huelva ends

“Competition from Spain has increased the last two years. Spanish cooperatives choose to grow early varieties, such as Fortuna and this results in reduced prices earlier in the season. As well, in my opinion, it causes a decrease in market sales, due to less tasty varieties on the market," said Garry Mercer from Sudoberry in Portugal.

Garry explains that Sudoberry grows strawberries 52 weeks a year and trials are being done to also produce blueberries and raspberries. “Sudoberry was established in 1998 to supply the UK market, however, since 2009, we are no longer part of a UK company. We developed other export markets such as Norway, Holland, France, Spain and Germany as well as working with agreements to supply Portuguese supermarkets.”

“In total we have 100 hectares of production fields, of which 67 are used to produce strawberries. Normally, we have 50% that as a spring crop, which is similar to the season in Huelva (Spain) and an another 50% for our summer/autumn crop. Our sales are balanced (50/50) between the domestic market and export. The main export season towards the Northern part of Europe is until June, with some additional export to France, Germany and Spain.”

“For example, we are able to supply France now with the new season strawberries to compensate for any shortage on their own production. This also applies to Spain and Germany, which allows us to increase our summer/autumn production in line with the demand of the market. The season has been tough so far, but now the season of Huelva (Spain) has ended, the market will change," concludes Garry.
