China: Rain drenches melon business

July is the peak season of water melons, but not this year. The cold and rainy weather of late has drenched the watermelon business. The price of the watermelons is a lot cheaper than the same period last year.

The bad sales of this year are a normal phenomenon. The rain decreases the amount of sugar in the watermelons. The watermelons also burst open easily during transport. The bad quality drops demand and losses for fruit farmers and speculators are big. On the other side, people are less interested in watermelons when the weather is bad. Altogether, the buying and wholesale prices for watermelons have definitely dropped. This is also related to an expansion of the watermelon cultivation area and an increased production volume.
