According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), agricultural exports in the first five months of this year (January-May) amounted to 1.859 million dollars, i.e. 4% more than in the same period of 2015.
The Ministry stated that this result meant there had been a 263 million dollar trade surplus in the aforementioned period.
Sales in the period were supported by the recovery and 306% growth of traditional agricultural exports and the increased purchases of Colombia (48%), Spain (30%), Mexico (29%), Belgium (23%) , the Netherlands (19%), France (16%), Chile (9%) and the US (5%).
The most demanded Peruvian products in the international market were common beans, as their sales increased by 451% in FOB value, followed by cranberries (209%) and fresh onions (120%).
Fresh avocado exports also increased (40%), as well as fresh fruit exports (26%), and exports of Valery Cavendish bananas (13%), among others.
Traditional agricultural exports in this period amounted to $124 million dollars, i.e. 36% more than in the same period of 2015.
The traditional category accounted for 7% of total agricultural exports.
Meanwhile, non-traditional exports registered sales of 1,735 million dollars, 2% more than in the first five months of 2015.
This category accounted for 93% of total agricultural exports. Avocado exports stood out and amounted to 160 million dollars (40%) and Cavendish Valery bananas exports totaled 69 million dollars (13%).
Fresh fruit exports amounted to 38 million dollars (26%), while whole paprika totaled 29 million dollars (39%), and cranberries exports 24 million (209% more).
Meanwhile, fresh mandarin exports amounted to 22 million dollars (5% up).
The agricultural trade balance between January and May this year was positive by $263 million dollars, as total exports amounted to 1,859 million and the country imported 1,596 million dollars. This was due to the increase in the exported net volume of various products, such as paprika (93%) and cranberries (263%), among others.
The result of the agricultural trade balance between January and May, meant the country had a 96% recovery compared to the result of the trade balance of that period in 2015.
