Marketing mango is becoming difficult as a result of this year's increase in production obtained in various production areas.
Daniel Ibarra Lugo, president of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Mango from the Fly Free Zone, said that, unfortunately, producers were unable to achieve good prices for their product because of the current oversupply of mango in the market.
He also stated that only 6 of the 14 packaging facilities there were in the northern state were working with the early Ataulfo and Tommy varieties. Actually, he said, there's been a low activity brought about by the difficult conditions encountered in the market, as the national overproduction is reflected in a greater number of shipments.
Last week they sent 4 million cartons to the US market, when that market can only support 3 million cartons.
"There's too much mango in the market and, consequently, packers can't pay producers more money as selling mangoes isn't very profitable right now. There's so much fruit that we aren't even paid a dollar per fruit exported, we get paid cents and that creates difficult conditions," he said.
He estimated that the 5,000 hectares in production in the fruit fly free zone, which produced 32,000 tons of mango in 2015, would produce some 38,000 tons of fruit this year.
The recommendation is to wait for the market to react.
