TOP Onions exports winter onions overseas

"Shakespeare in demand for good storability and skin strength"

"The Shakespeare is in demand due to good storability and skin strength.” You would not think that winter onions would have a large market in subtropical places. The Shakespeare proves you wrong; this onion variety has many opportunities in overseas destinations.

Rinus Wisse of TOP Onions, a family business that has focussed the past few decades on the production and processing of onions: "Shakespeare is in demand because of the uniformly round shape, the relatively good storability, and a narrow stem that makes it easier to dry the onion. In the past, we have been reserved in sending the winter onions to far away destinations. Now, we have changed our views. We can see that the Shakespeare is more popular in retail. At the moment, we are packing for Cenral America and Africa. Shakespeare has proven to have certain properties that are valued everywhere."

Erwin Groen of TOP Onions states that the onion variety Shakespeare is a good alternative for other winter varieties. "The Shakespeare can be harvested earlier than Troy, and slightly later than Senshyu Yellow. With regard to the cost price, this variety is very interesting, because the costs for raw material are much lower than for other varieties. The relatively large volumes have made producers decide to produce Shakespeare winter onions as well. Last week, for example, we have estimated a party at 53 net tons per hectare."

"We hope to have shipped the last winter onions by the end of the week. Then we will shift to the onions from the early segment. The developments of the early segments have not stopped; every day new varieties are introduced to the market. The first Lombardi onions were harvested last week," says Rinus.
