Panama and Antwerp to cooperate in logistics and port issues

According to an official source, Panama's Maritime Authority (AMP) and the Port Authority of Antwerp (Belgium) signed a memorandum for logistics and port cooperation.

The memorandum, which was signed in the Port of Antwerp, is the culmination of a stage of strengthening political relations between Panama and the Belgian port terminal, said the Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The strengthening of relations started in the beginning of 2015 when Panamanian authorities, such as the country's president, Juan Carlos Varela, and the Vice President and Foreign Minister, Isabel De Saint Malo de Alvarado, visited the Port of Antwerp.

Back then, Varela and Saint Malo met with port managers and spoke about the potential that the strengthening of cooperation could have on the development of logistics and port area, stressed the Panamanian Foreign Ministry.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the administrator of the AMP, Jorge Barakat, and the chairman of the board of the Port of Antwerp, Mark van Peel, and its executive director, Eddy Bruyninckx.

The Port of Antwerp is located in the center of Europe, a strategic point between the north and the rest of the continent.

With more than 50 kilometers in docks, the Belgian port has developed a powerful industrial center for the European economy and has become one of the largest ports in Europe, ranking second only after the port of Rotterdam in terms of total cargo transported.

Antwerp is located in the middle of the Scheldt-Maas-Rhine-delta.
