Costa Rica: Los Chiles can't expand pineapple crops in the next five years

The City Council of Los Chiles declared a five-year moratorium to the expansion of pineapple cultivation. Local living forces, supported by deputy Edgardo Araya of the Frente Amplio, made this request.

The neighbors of the pineapple fields have blamed the pineapple sector for various environmental problems in the location, such as water and soil pollution, and a plague of flies in the crop waste that is affecting the livestock.

Representatives of pineapple sector respect the decision; however, they will thoroughly review the resolution to propose alternate solutions and have not ruled out taking the case to the Constitutional Court.

There are at least 4,500 hectares devoted to pineapple crops in Los Chiles. A number that won't increase, for the moment.

This activity generates at least 3,000 direct jobs in this region of Alajuela. In the past, Pococi and Guacimo took similar measures.
