Producer José Dequidt:

"Sprouting broccoli tastes like green asparagus"

It is not a hybrid of various cabbages, it is a pure bred product: the sprouting broccoli. It is a relatively new product and producer José Dequidt from Pollinkhoeve is the only one in Belgium with this innovation. This year he is trying to make it more popular again. "There were multiple producers that produced this product, but they have quit. The production is very labour intensive and you must really want to produce it."

Sprouting broccoli: Branches, top buds, and on the right the baby broccoli.

Top buds and branches
The product is related to the broccoli, the top buds and the branches of this plant are sold. "The shoots are packed in packs of 100 gram. There is some interest from retail and restaurants, so the product is getting more popular. On a plate the sprouting broccoli is beautiful as garnish and the taste is wonderful. It tastes a bit like a green asparagus."

Supply until September
This year the sprouting broccoli can be supplied until September. "We have been harvesting the past two weeks. I have planted twice, so I can supply until September or the beginning of October. The products are not accessible through auction, so those interested can contact me directly."

New: baby broccoli
This producer is known for his various innovations regarding cabbages. He offers flower sprouts, pointed red cabbage, and the sprouting broccoli. This year he has started with baby broccoli. "It is a bit of a testing period and I'm not sure if I will continue this variety. It is a variety that is easily cut into florets. After cutting one has small florets of the same colour. This is greatly appreciated by many chefs. These are supplied in packs of 200 gram."
