Italian onions doing well abroad

Golden onions from Emilia-Romagna are doing well abroad but not so much in Italy. "Sales are good in Northern Europe, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands as the wet weather pushes demand and, as their own local produce is not available yet, they have to make purchases abroad," explains Matteo Freddi from Freddi Prodotti Ortofrutticoli.

This good period, however, will not last forever as the new season is about to start abroad. "At the moment, they are looking for early produce, but harvesting will start soon. Some producers have already started in Holland and Belgium but there is no rush as their market is so big they have no problem selling. They can wait for onions to be perfectly ripe."

The weather is also the reason why sales are slow in Italy, as the heat leads to a drop in demand. The consumption of onions, in fact, depends on the weather. This also explains why things went well in June - it rained a lot and temperatures were below average.

The new season has just started, but we can already say that volumes will be higher than last year - as the past season went very well, in fact, producers sowed more.
