The tangerine market could currently be called good as an extension of the total citrus market. This results in good prices for Peruvian minneolas. “In the past weeks we received minneolas from the Huaral region, north of Lima, and the last of those are on their way now. We have started shipping from Paracas, and from there we will ship until week 30-31,” say Thijs Terwindt, responsible for import from Peru with Van der Lans International.
According to Terwindt, the volume of Peruvian minneolas is lower than usual this year, in part because trees have been cut down as a consequence of results in the past. “The market is good, currently. Supply of clementines is limited, making the minneolas a good alternative. Two weeks ago we started with prices around 17-18 euro for the first arrivals, and by now prices are around 15-16 euro. While South African minneolas are also available, their colour and quality is not as good.”
“The quality of the Peruvian minneolas is fine. The colour is not dark orange, but every shipment is improving. We expect good colour for the tangerines from Paracas, in any case. The flavour of the minneolas is good, brix levels are around 11, the peel is thin and they are filled with juice,” Terwindt continues. “There are not many suppliers of Peruvian minneolas, and customers can therefore really distinguish themselves. The minneolas are popular in domestic retail in particular, but also on the Belgian, British and Scandinavian retail markets.”
