Consumers not put off despite high Hass prices

Global consumption of avocados has increased many fold over the last few years, it seems no one can get enough and demand does not seem to overly affected even when prices are high. This trend has not escaped the bars and restaurants in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh and beyond.

"In the last 6-12 months we have been selling more and more Hass avocados. A year ago we were lucky to sell 2-3 cases per week, but that has all changed and people don't mind paying the premium for the Hass avocado. In the past they would choose the green varieties as they were cheaper, now around 70% of our avocado sales are Hass," according to Ernie Miller from Total Produce Edinburgh. "Now we are selling anything from half a pallet to a pallet a week, this may not be a lot to other distributors but for us here it is a huge increase."

"Customers want the avocados ready to eat and the market is quite buoyant, we supply the catering trade mostly, not just in Edinburgh but as far north as Inverness and Aberdeen and right down to the border."
