Citrus Australia uses Chinese social media to promote Aussie fruit

Citrus Australia CEO, Judith Damiani, gave a presentation on the influential Chinese social media platform, WeChat, to a fresh produce network last week.

WeChat is the largest social media messaging platform in China with over 700 million active users.

Judith spoke to the invitation-only fresh produce network, which consists of 11 groups and 4000 participants. Her lecture followed by a Q&A session lasted 90 minutes.

Her presentation included an overview of the Australian citrus industry – growing regions, varieties, seasonality, ChAFTA, quality, export, and production trends.

Judith said the level of interest and the number of questions from the audience was high and included: export market trends, logistics, fruit quality and varieties, maturity standards, promotion, Chinese citrus industry and e-commerce.

“It was my first public presentation using WeChat and once you get the hang of the translation timing its actually quite fun to speak, type and upload images or slides for an interactive (and low-cost) session with thousands of interested people on the other side of the world!”

Shanghai-based importer, Kurt Huang, told delegates at the Citrus Market Outlook Forum in Sydney in March: “Almost everybody in China use WeChat on phone.”

“If you want to do business or connect to Chinese friends, you really need to install WeChat to your phone.”
