Richard Strijbis, Tovano: “It looks like Christmas”
“Good Medjoul date and raw nut season”
Tovano’s Medjoul date season is nearly over, but the men in Maasdijk, the Netherlands, managed to lay their hands on a final container arriving on Friday. “It has been a good season for us, with decent quality and good prices. We will have a short break soon, and from mid-September we will have the new harvest,” says Richard Strijbis.

Not just the sales of Medjoul dates went well, raw nuts are also a hot item. “People are becoming more familiar with raw cashews, pecans and almonds. They are terribly healthy, and quite a bit cheaper than a year ago. Besides, they are available year-round,” Strijbis continues. “For example, we import walnuts from the US, Eastern Europe and Chile. The seasons have all become year-round, same as with fresh strawberries and mangoes.”
Although the summer is still a calmer period, the distribution of work in the nut trade has become increasingly year-round. “Previously we had to make a profit between September and December, but now we work year-round. We even have products that do particularly well in summer. For example, peeled walnuts and pine nuts do very well in salads.”
