Low citrus price due to abundant import volumes

Import avocados performing strongly on Shanghai market

Since the beginning of June, the Shanghai import market has been flooded with oranges. Prices are low due to large supplies. For example, 18kg of Australian oranges goes for 280RMB, around 38 euros, which is lower price than last year. The Egyptian late-season oranges go for 100RMB (13 euro) for 15kg.

American cherries are also in their early-season import period. The cherries are still only imported by air freight, and quantities are small. Still, market price is only 300RMB (40 euros).

In this environment of low prices, imported avocados are an exception. The price for a pack 20 avocados has surged to 200RMB, single avocados are for sale for 9 Yuan.

The exception of the avocado is based on two things. The avocados are imported only from Mexico and Peru, both in the early production season. The quality of the avocados is good and the supply limited. Moreover, there is no substitute for avocados on the market. The taste and nutritional value of avocados are unique.

Chinese and US retail dealers look forward to the kick off of the Mexican avocado season. Then the price will be adjusted.
