Good season comes to an end for Georgia peppers

It’s the first of July and Georgia pepper growers are wrapping up their season, making room in the market for New Jersey, Michigan and North Carolina growers. An industry source said yields were very good and remainders of the bell pepper and specialty peppers (Hungarian wax, jalapeno and long hot) crops are being picked. Crops for jumbo and double X peppers were excellent, especially because of the variety used to produce the Jumbo and double X pepper.

A decent spring and drier weather kept prices fairly in check. Prices per box got as low as $10.00, as high as $16.00 and were mostly around $12.00 to $14.00 for the majority of the season.

Certain area farms in southern Georgia will start packing eggplant next. Although it’s producing well, the source stated the market is somewhat low. Prices for a one and a nine box of fancies is $8.00, $6.00 for large and $5.00 on choice eggplants.
