15% increase in red onion volumes from Cavasso in 2016

The traditional cultivation of Cavasso red onions, which was very popular up to the 1950s, was almost forgotten in western Friuli, but it has been rediscovered lately in Cavasso Nuovo and Castelnovo del Friuli with the help of the Chamber of Commerce of Pordenone.

Red onion producers from Cavasso Nuovo and pink onion producers from Val Cosa have met in front of Cavasso mayor Emanuele Zanon and Castelnovo mayor Lara De Michiel to agree on a production specification.

This type of onion will only be grown in the municipalities on the right bank of the Tagliamento in crops located at a precise height.

Depending on the soil, these onions have characteristic colours that vary from golden red to bright pink. They are crunchy and sweet, so they can also be eaten raw.

The specification will apply to around 30 producers who started growing these onions with the purpose of making them available in a wider area. They are gathered into two associations "Produttori cipolla rossa di Cavasso Nuovo" represented by Silvano Carpenenedo and "Rivindicules", represented by Giannino Cozzi.

At the end of 2015 the 80 thousand plants planted in Cavasso, Meduno, Fanna, Sequals and Arba were able to meet demands with their 130 quintals produced.

The aim for 2016 is to increase volumes and work more closely together to meet demand coming not only from local markets, but also from Veneto, Milan and Rome.

The productive trend has been positive so far and quantities have been increasing every year, though weather factors like for example hailstorms may cause a few problems.

10-15% more produce (depending on the weather) is expected for 2016.

Emanuele Zanon, mayor kof Cavasso and product manager, declared that "production is carried out by hand in small plots with greenhouses. We want our product to be not only a commercial activity, but a tourist attraction to rediscover local traditions and recover abandoned plots."
