Agricor-Gallo apricot season coming to an end

Excellent flavour and sugar level for the apricots of Organizzazione di produttori Agricor - Gallo, whose season will end at the end of the month. "The rain spared us, but we have been affected by the huge climate change, especially for what concerns grades. The fruit remained small and yields per hectare were low. In addition, the wind caused the leaves to scratch the fruit, so much so that 20-30% of it had to go to waste," explains administrator Natalino Gallo.

"The only consolation is that apricots are really sweet. The season will end one week earlier than usual though at a commercial level we are in line with last year. The produce was destined mainly to domestic and Austrian chains, nothing was shipped to Germany due to the lack of volumes."

Climate change alert
Climate change and the behaviour of the new varieties tested are a cause of uncertainty. "People have rushed into testing new cultivars but results have not been positive for what concerns us. Climate change means we will not be expanding. For example, on June 26th, there were 35°C but a huge hailstorm hit the area just one kilometre away. Things like this never used to happen."

Variety creators should develop cultivars able to withstand such extreme changes.
