Spain: Caprabo sees flat sales in 2015
Caprabo saw broadly flat sales growth in 2015, with turnover contracting by 0.3% to €1.12 bn. The retailer noted that while it was disappointing to see a contraction, it still meant it outperformed the market, which shrank by 0.8% in 2015. However, its profitability improved with operating income up by 11% to €26.8m and its net profit rising by 66% to €16.6m, excluding the impact of divestments. (igd.com)

International distributors attack new Polish retail tax law

International distributors have described a new tax approved by the Polish government as “discriminatory” and "xenophobic”. From 1 August, Poland will tax supermarket revenue, based on a progressive tax rate: distributors with a turnover above PLN 170m (EUR 38.3m) will have to pay a 1.4% tax. Companies below PLN 17m (EUR 3.8m) are exempt. (thenews.pl)

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo, based in Veghel, has won first place in GfK’s Summertime to Christmas report for the fourth consecutive time, and for the 16th time in total. UK: Morrisons plans to complain about another Aldi advert

Supermarket Morrisons is to make a new complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority about discount chain Aldi. The news comes on the day that the ASA upheld a complaint by Morrisons that three Aldi adverts were misleading. But Morrisons said that despite Wednesday's ruling, Aldi had launched another similar price comparison advert which was just as unfair. Aldi said in response to the new complaint that it believes its new advert fully complies with ASA rules. (BBC)

According to local reports, A101 is to acquire the Istanbul-based Çağrı chain, which operates around 45 compact hypermarkets, neighbourhood stores and discount stores. The deal is subject to approval from local competition authorities. (igd.com)

Spain: El Corte Inglés expands private label, grows online scale
El Corte Inglés will expand its premium private label range at its Hipercor stores by adding 1,500 products. The range will provide a differentiated position to its existing ‘Aliada’ value brand, which covers around 600 products, and the Hipercor range. The changes are set to be rolled out by the end of autumn 2016 as it looks to support its margin expansion in a low volume growth market. (igd.com)

Spain: Ahorramás grows sales by 5.8% in 2015
Ahorramás enjoyed sales growth of 5.8% in 2015, taking its turnover to €1.49 bn, and enabled it to announce its 10th year of continued sales growth. In 2015 the retailer added nine new stores, taking its total footprint to 247 and selling space of 187,976 sq. m. Looking ahead to 2016, Ahorramás said it expected to generate sales of €1.58 bn as it maintained investment, at about €60m, as it looked to add a further eight stores. (igd.com)
