Korean strawberry exports falling every year

According to Jespersen Choi of Joy Farm, a farmer's union located in Sanchung, South Korea, which is devoted to the production of both summer and winter strawberries (with some organic crops, as well), "The country’s exports are falling every year, as the competition for strawberries is high all over the world, like Egypt or New Zealand. In any case, this is not a problem for the growers, because if we cannot export, we just sell to the domestic market.”



The main reason why the consumption of Korean strawberries remains stable at domestic level is the fact that the government does not allow their import, so there are no international strawberries in Korea.

Korean consumers do not like the taste of foreign strawberries, as they are not accustomed to their taste. “The only imported strawberries come from China, and those are frozen ones. The flavor does not actually matter, because they are processed, mixed and sweetened with syrups."



At the moment, Joy Farm is making its preparations for the summer season, although it remains difficult to predict what the results will be, as the crop’s performance is highly dependent on the weather conditions.
