What does it take to be a fresh produce trader?

As the fresh produce industry comes under increasing pressure to feed a hungry planet, the industry must in turn look for people who can facilitate an efficient supply chain from grower to customer. So what does being a fresh produce trader entail?

Being a successful fresh produce trader, i.e. some one who moves food around the globe, makes enormous demands; they need to be an expert not only in buying but selling and logistics as well. The range and depth of information they need to keep in their head is phenomenal, for example the difference in organising sea freight to road transport is vast, not to mention the specific documentation that each country demands for importing and exporting.

Technical knowledge aside, a trader needs ideally to be multi-lingual, culturally aware and possess excellent people skills to enable them to build relationships and a rapport across borders and continents. Traders are a special breed, as they are willing to transport something perishable around the world – and that requires dedication and an eye for detail, and at Rush, these skills are acknowledged and remunerated accordingly.

Rush Group’s Managing Director, David Ough says: “At Rush we are totally transparent in how you get paid, as I believe this transparency engenders a sense of trust. It is an approach that encourages the company to work as a whole rather than a set of individuals, as everyone feels that they are getting an equal and appropriate slice of the financial cake.”

“In fact Rush Group’s payment package has proved so popular, senior staff from rival companies have expressed a desire to join us, as they realise that their skill and hard work will be recognised and more importantly – rewarded.”
