Demand of Maggiolina onions up due to good temperatures

The Maggiolina onion market has finally picked up pace. "We are in the middle of the campaign and sales always improve when it is sunny. The situation was kind of slow earlier with all the rain and low temperatures," explains Matteo Freddi from Freddi Prodotti Ortofrutticoli .

The majority of the production is shipped to France, Germany and Belgium or to the processing market, as the variety precedes the Borettana one.

Maggiolina onions. While these packed are ones destined to be sold on the market, the majority of the production is destined to the processing industry.

This year, volumes are "slightly higher than last year, but still average. Last year they were lower due to the heat and, the year before, they were lower due to the excessive rain. Demand is good at the moment, especially since it is rather stable."

"We do not produce more because we are interested in covering the specific period between mid June and late July, i.e. before the Maggiolina onions from the Netherlands are available. Their produce is unique and their prices are half ours because they have no problems due to high temperatures."
