“This onion can be directly shipped to the Far East”

“If the tests are not lying, we now have an onion that can be directly shipped to the Far East. We would really have something unique on our hands then.” André Boot of Hazera is clearly very enthusiastic about the new biennial onion Contado. The strain shows such an unprecedented skin firmness during the tests, that far-off destinations seem within reach.

“We are testing 35 hectares this year, including in Schouwen-Duiveland in a cooperation between cultivators Bevelander and De Boer. The latter has been cultivating onions his entire life, but says this robust and strong onion is truly distinctive. The Contado has a skin firmness we might recognise from the Vento onion, and it also has a fairly high dry dust content. Under the right cultivation circumstances this is a hard onion with a good skin firmness,” Boot continues.

“The strain enters the market three days after large standard strains, and is therefore extremely early. This year it is also showing that it does well regarding earliness. Furthermore, it is typical of the onion to be round or very round, with a fairly slim neck, yellow-bronze in colour with high profit potential. For sowing advice we stick to about 100 kilograms per hectare in the first year of planting.”
