"We have received the first shipments of white onions, which have been packed and shipped to the Middle East. Today, we have already received the Medio Grano and are ready to start sorting and packing to be prepared for the first orders we get," explains Pablo Tébar, of the technical and export department of Agrícola Villarrobledo S. A.
Agrícola Villarrobledo S. A. belongs to a group of companies based in Albacete, with experience in the sale of certified seeds, fertilizers, plant protection products and grain for flour mills, but a few years ago, they decided to venture into the production and marketing of onions. Today, the company markets around 20 million kilos per year and intends to continue opening markets to export its products.
"Last year, a large volume was shipped to Brazil and we want to continue growing in this market, although we know we have to go slowly, because its economy is currently weakened. The demand is huge, since they truly appreciate the look and calibre of Spanish onions, as well as their organoleptic properties," affirms Pablo Tébar.
Mostly Germany, followed by the UK, France, Italy and even the Netherlands, are the European markets in which the company works. "Although the Netherlands is a major producer of onions, it also demands our quality product. They usually demand large onions; red onions, however, have a greater demand in African countries, and they are on the rise in European countries."
According to Pablo Tébar, the great diversity of calibres allows Spain to be competitive in many markets. "Since we produce the onions ourselves, we can adapt to the market's needs and grow a product which, both in terms of colour and size, has the most demanded characteristics."
In the words of Pablo Tébar: "We like working with this product and wish to show our commitment to this market, so we have acquired new facilities with a greater capacity and cold storage in order to consolidate a quality brand: CEBOLLAS INIESTA. For now, our customers' reaction has been positively enthusiastic, so we are very excited about this project."
"We will supply yellow, white and red onions. Our goal is to have availability of onions all year round, importing from other sources, such as the Netherlands, Chile or Brazil, in the off-season, without ruling out exploring the market with other products, such as garlic and potatoes."
