Spain is largest producer of deep frozen broccoli in Europe

Broccoli is increasingly fashionable due to its health benefits and it is one of Spain's most produced and exported vegetables. The Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Frozen Vegetables, ASEVEC, recommends consuming them frequently, either as a main course or as a side dish, especially during hot months, as their properties help keep people hydrated. Broccoli has become one of the most popular vegetables and, consequently, production has had significant growth in recent years.

Spain is the largest producer of deep frozen broccoli in Europe according to ASEVEC, due to the increase in demand, production of deep frozen broccoli in the last six years has gone from an annual output of 60,000 tons in 2010 to 111,000 tons in 2015. Regarding the production of frozen specialties, broccoli ranks second - right after mixed frozen products- with a share of 13% volume of the total production.

Last year, 93% of the broccoli produced in the country was destined for export, i.e. 103,000 tons of broccolis were shipped. "We encourage people to increase consumption of frozen vegetables in general and broccoli in particular, to improve their diet, following the WHO criteria," said Alvaro Aguilar, the general secretary of ASEVEC. He also stated "we at ASEVEC are especially proud that our product is 100% Spanish."
