Mexico: US is main partner of Chiapas' agricultural food sector

The United States continues to be the main trading partner for the agricultural business products of the state of Chiapas.

Geographical conditions, signed trade agreements, and the high population of Mexicans living in the US, facilitate the exports that Chiapas conducts to that country.

According to data from SAGARPA, the state of Chiapas exports a total of 63 food products, such as coffee, banana, mango, onion, avocado, honey, flour wheat, papaya, and mangosteen, among others, which together amount to more than 100 million dollars.

The United States is the main market for the red tomato, rambutan, avocado, papaya, Persian lime, and Ataulfo mango, among other products, produced in Chiapas.

Chiapas exports 26,000 tons of Ataulfo mango to the United States, a volume that is growing year after year.

Even though Chiapas exports more than 90 percent of its food products to the United States, the main markets for some of its products are countries of the European Union (EU).

In recent years, Chiapas has been visited by European buyers who want to see the work carried out by organizations that have the capacity to export coffee to Europe.

The departure of the UK, particularly England, from the European Union won't have a big impact on the exports that Chiapas does to the EU, as the countries with which the entity does business, such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Sweden, among others, continue to be part of the EU.

The Chiapas Exporter program allows producers of the entity to have higher and better income, as they avoid the middlemen and trade becomes more direct.

Chiapas has no choice but to further strengthen the food industry and promote linking producers with international markets.
