India: Chilean apples have dominated the market

The local apple season in India is almost finished in a campaign that has been marked by a very big crop, larger than last year’s. According to Tarun Arora, of IGInternational, “Imported apples are now becoming available in the market from various origins. There are Washington, Chinese and Chilean apples in the market where Chilean apples have a large market share. For the last two weeks, Chilean apples have dominated the market. The fruit also arrives in smaller volumes from Belgium, Italy, Poland and France.”

Regarding prices, he states that there is product on the market that is sold for 32/33 dollars, but also 45 and up to 50 dollars, so it is quite variable. Washington and European apples, for instance, are more expensive, but Chinese apples are cheaper. “High income groups go mostly for Washington or Royal Gala apples from Chile, which are a bit pricier,” he states.

Worth noting is the fact that the volume of imports this year has increased compared to 2015. “The market has grown by around 15% in the month of April and in May there has been a 10% increase, so I believe that overall the market this year will grow by 15 to 20% easily,” assures Arora.

He also added that one of the reasons for this is the fact that the retail and distribution chain has become much more efficient, which guarantees the marketing of good quality fruit. Consumer trends are also affected by the greater interest in consuming healthy products.

As for other products, Arora wishes to highlight the exceptional situation of kiwifruit in India, as already in the first 7 weeks of shipments. “We have done 200% of the total volume shipped to India in any year from the last 11 years. This category is growing significantly in India and we are hopeful of further volume growth in this category from Chile.”

He says that with another 10 weeks of shipment left where the Chilean season lasts until week 35-36, it is likely that the Chilean industry will export 4,000 MT, which will mean a 500% growth of Chilean kiwifruit in the Indian market in just one year. “I will not be surprised if we see 20,000 MT of kiwifruit coming to India from Chile in the next 4-5 years,” says Arora. Besides Chile, another important kiwifruit supplier for India is Greece, but its season has already finished.
