German football fans work in the fruit & veg sector

Euro 2016 apple actions stimulate the football hype

Euro 2016 is in full swing, even in the fruit and vegetable departments in Germany. Fruit wholesaler Faby is one of the companies that takes Euro 2016 very serious and uses it as a marketing tool in supermarkets. For example the 3-kilo apple crates (Jonagold and Red Jonaprince) contain a German flag and smaller packs with six apples have the Euro 2016 schedule on them. And some coworkers wear the German hats as a proud symbol of support for the German team during the European Championship! And friendly bets are placed on the outcome of the German matches.

Another company, SeeFrucht in the Lake Constance area, is suffering from football fever too. Klaus Dubenkrop, CEO of SeeFrucht sales company wears a German shirt to the games. He also tries to predict the results of the match. SeeFrucht sells packages with apples and the Euro 2016 schedule at Kaufland. Dubenkrop states: “During the last World Cup we had a German football scarf in the packaging, we didn’t do that this year. I find the sentiment towards the success of the German football rather cautious, just as our attitude towards regional products. It is unclear why customers buy so little regional fruit and vegetables, for instance from the Lake Constance area. Customers should give regionally products priority over foreign products. They should stimulate our local economy more!"

The CEO of Elbe-fruit Frank Döscher states: “I love football, so we have a Euro 2016 action too! This year we have big actions; we distribute special packs with German banners and sweepstakes with a trip to Paris as a prize or a TV and a video projector for private viewing. These actions should stimulate consumers to buy apples. I have great confidence in the German team and look forward to the football matches," concludes Frank Döscher.

The last German match ended in a 0-0 tie, a disappointing end to an exciting game. And the next match will be against Northern Ireland.
