Wouter Willems, ZON:

“Recovery red bell peppers, yellow and orange lagging”

A remarkable divide in prices between red and green bell peppers on the one side and yellow and orange bell peppers on the other side can be seen on the bell pepper market this year. “Normally orange is the best colour regarding prices, because significantly fewer kilograms are cut in regards to the other colours, but that is not the case this year,” says Wouter Willems, responsible for bell pepper sales for ZON.

Prices for red bell peppers are far more than 2 Euro. Green bell peppers are sold at 1.25 Euro, yellow bell peppers at around 1 Euro, and prices for orange bell peppers are around 1.10 Euro. “For red bell peppers we saw a major recovery this week. Supply is significantly less yet the programmes were entered into everywhere. Prices can change abruptly then,” concludes Willems.

“With bell peppers we are behind last year regarding sales and average price, but compared with other fruit vegetables we can definitely not complain. On average things are all right, although, for example, orange bell peppers are on the wrong side of the divide this year,” Willems continues. “It is difficult to give an explanation. Despite reports, Spain has continued bell peppers for quite a long time, and export to far off destinations such as the US and Japan has not been extremely large.”

“Furthermore, for good bell pepper consumption, stable summer weather is welcome. Less shops were visited because of the wet weather in Germany and Southeastern Europe last week. But we are positive. Fortunately, quality of the bell peppers is fine this year, and we also see good results for our efforts at auction. We see customers returning daily, and that is positive.”
